Junior Sailing Courses

RYA Youth Sailing Scheme

At MPSC we provide youth training on a Wednesday evening from 6:30pm to 8:30pm (May-August) and Saturday morning training from 9:30am till 12:30pm with a break in the session (April-October). This is unlike the traditional intensive weekend courses, weekly sessions give our young sailors time to build skills gradually, practise between sessions, gain confidence and develop a deeper understanding of sailing.

The RYA Youth Sailing Scheme is a fun, progressive programme designed to help young sailors build their confidence and skills on the water. Whether they are stepping into a dinghy for the first time or developing towards independent sailing and racing, each stage builds on the skills learned previously.

At Manor Park Sailing Club, our instructors help young sailors progress at their own pace in a safe, supportive and enjoyable environment. The youth scheme progresses through 4 stages.

Stage 1 Getting Started
Perfect for complete beginners! Young sailors learn the basics of their boat, how to launch and recover, steer and understand how the sails make the boat move. By the end of Stage 1, sailors should be able to steer and understand the basic principles of sailing.

Stage 2 Building Skills
Sailors start to become more confident and learn to sail around a course. They develop their tacking and gybing, improve their boat control and learn basic ropework and collision avoidance.

Stage 3 Becoming More Independent
Stage 3 develops confidence and introduces sailing in a wider range of conditions. Sailors improve their rigging, launching and recovery skills, learn more sailing theory and practise capsize recovery and sailing techniques on all points of sail.

Stage 4 Developing Independence
The next step towards becoming a confident and capable sailor. Young people learn to sail a double-handed boat as either helm or crew, develop more advanced boat-handling skills and learn to solve problems while afloat.

What's next?

Completing Stage 4 opens the door to further RYA development, including Seamanship Skills, Sailing with Spinnakers, Start Racing and Joining our instructor pathway.
